SOPHIE

As the wall clock ticked its annoying noise, and what felt like hours had passed, time stood still for Sophie. Sheriff Jones had yet to return to the station as he promised he would, making her wonder if she had made a mistake in coming to the authorities.

Nancy lounged in her chair and read through a magazine. Her feet were propped up on the edge of the desk and she moved as if she had nothing better to do.

Sophie paced the empty precinct as the stress and tension mounted. Sounds of crackling static from radios loomed throughout the silent station and grated on Sophie’s thinning nerves.

“How much longer is Sheriff Jones going to be gone?” She asked Nancy in a raised, irritated voice. “I thought he wasn’t going to be gone long. He’s been gone for hours.”

“Sheriff Jones should be back soon,” Nancy answered calmly while flipping the pages of her magazine. “And he’s only been gone less than an hour. The Sheriff and his men are doing the best they can considering the mess that’s landed in their laps and well, everyone else’s. I’m sorry, but you’re going to have to be patient and wait, Ms. Carter. That’s about the best I can do for you right now.”

“It feels like it’s been longer than an hour.”

Sophie raised her arms and continued pacing the floor. Her fingers were laced together behind her head as she exhaled the frustration through her nose.

Nancy said, “You know, you should be sitting down and elevating that foot of yours while you can. That’s going to help keep the swelling down and get you better.”

She dropped her arms and huffed at the suggestion even though Sophie knew Nancy was right. “Yeah. I know it will, but I’m anxious, and sitting makes the waiting worse. Being up and moving helps it from getting too bad.”

“I understand, dear. I can only imagine what you’ve been through,” Nancy replied in a sympathetic and genuine tone. “Being such a small town, we don’t run across too many of these sorts of cases, but we have gotten contacted by the bigger departments about similar, unfortunate incidents like yours.”

“Then you have an idea of what I had to go through to make it here,” Sophie said. “It’s extremely hard to do when you feel alone and it’s as if the world is against you.”

“I’m not going to pretend that I can relate, but I can say that if you want to talk about it, or anything for that matter, I’m a good listener.” Nancy peered around the empty station from one side to the other. “We have nothing else to do. This way, you can sit down, take the pressure off your ankle, and we can chat. Or not. No pressure. Your call.”

Deep down, Sophie appreciated how calm and understanding Nancy was to her. She had been surrounded by evil for so long that it made the good feel weird as if it was a dream instead of reality.

Having spoken with Nancy made Sophie desperate to hear her mother’s voice.
